The easiest places to find a steam room are hotel spas, bathhouses and full-service gyms. Among the big gym chains, 24 Hour Fitness, Equinox and Life Time have one at most clubs, the YMCA at about half of its branches, and Planet Fitness at none.
That's what our own listings show. As of October 2026, 1,525 of the 6,863 listings in the AllSaunas directory have a steam room. We only list places where we found a sauna or steam room, so read the numbers below as "of the places we list", not as a share of every gym or hotel in the country.
Gyms make up the biggest group, with 610 of the 1,525 steam room listings. Day spas come next with 401, then hotels and resorts with 255, bathhouses with 112 and recovery or wellness centers with 111.
The share tells you more than the raw count, though. If you pick a place at random from each type, this is how likely it is to have a steam room:
So a hotel spa or a bathhouse is the safest bet. Day spas and recovery studios lean on infrared instead: 1,939 of the day spas and 2,221 of the recovery centers we list have an infrared sauna.
California has the most steam rooms by far (340 listings), followed by Florida (166), Texas (109) and New York (87).
If you want steam included with a membership, the chain matters more than anything else. Here are the chains we have enough listings for. The counts are distinct clubs, after merging a few branches that appear in our directory twice.
| Chain | Clubs we list | Clubs with a steam room |
|---|---|---|
| 24 Hour Fitness | 180 | 159 |
| Equinox | 36 | 36 |
| In-Shape (California) | 49 | 45 |
| Genesis Health Clubs | 28 | 25 |
| YMCA | 84 | 45 |
| OneLife Fitness | 31 | 18 |
| Crunch | 54 | 5, per Crunch's own club pages |
| LA Fitness | 7 | Rare |
| Planet Fitness | 0 | None |
Life Time isn't in the table because our listings undercount its steam rooms. Life Time's own club pages are the better source. Our Life Time article checked 27 of them and 25 listed a steam room. A typical one, the Cary, North Carolina club, lists a Eucalyptus Steam Room in its recovery area plus a steam room in the locker room.
Crunch is the opposite case. Every Crunch club page carries a general line about "saunas, steam rooms, and more", but only five clubs we list name a steam room in their own amenity list, all in Florida: Doral, Kirkman, Orlando Park, Plantation and Winter Park. The Doral page, for example, lists a steam room next to its pool and Jacuzzi.
Planet Fitness doesn't have saunas or steam rooms at any club, Black Card included. LA Fitness has a dry sauna at most clubs, but steam rooms are rare. We don't have enough listings to answer for Gold's Gym, EoS, Anytime Fitness, Vasa or Chuze, so check those chains' club pages directly.
Even inside a chain that usually has steam, the room can be closed for repairs or missing at smaller clubs. Look at the specific club's amenity list before you join.
Outside of gyms, access is the main question. Hotel spas often keep the steam room for hotel guests or people booking a treatment, and some sell a day pass on top. The Rock Spa at Seminole Hard Rock Tampa, for example, sells a day pass that covers its jacuzzi, steam room, salt sauna and co-ed lounge for $100 Monday to Thursday and $200 on weekends and holidays, as of October 2026. Its steam rooms are in the men's and women's areas, and swimsuits are required in the shared lounge.
Many day spas work the same way, with the steam room included when you book a massage or facial. If you only want the heat, call and ask whether they sell spa access on its own.
Bathhouses are the simplest. You pay for entry, usually by the visit or by the hour, and the steam room is part of it. Banya 5 in Seattle charges $70 for a two-hour entry, and the Seattle Times notes you can use its eucalyptus steam room and sauna without booking a service. Its spa rules require swimsuits.
A eucalyptus steam room is a regular steam room with eucalyptus oil added to the steam, or fresh eucalyptus branches hung inside. It smells strong and clean, and many people like how it feels when they're stuffy.
In our directory, 219 listings mention eucalyptus, and at 208 of them it's in the steam room. Hotels lead (79 listings), with gyms (55) and day spas (54) close behind. Two brands account for a lot of them. 31 of the 36 Equinox clubs we list mention it, and Equinox's own pages advertise it, like the "Eucalyptus Steam Rooms" on the Brooklyn Heights club page. Four Seasons is the other, with eucalyptus steam at 22 of its US hotels in our listings. In Seattle, for example, the hotel's fact sheet lists large steam rooms in the men's and women's locker rooms, and Forbes Travel Guide describes the eucalyptus steam room there.
If you don't like strong scents, ask before you go. Where the eucalyptus is added to the steam, you can't turn it off.
Two-thirds of the steam room listings (1,016 of 1,525) also have a traditional dry sauna, so you can usually try both. Only 275 list steam rooms and no other kind of heat room. A few minutes of steam, a cool shower, then the sauna is a common routine. Our steam room vs sauna guide covers how the two feel and the order to use them in.
Steam rooms usually run around 110 to 120°F, while saunas are often kept at 160°F or more, according to WebMD. The steam room still feels intense, because the air is so wet that your sweat can't evaporate. WebMD suggests keeping a session to 5 to 10 minutes.
Start with our steam room search, or gyms with a steam room if you want it with a membership. Each facility page shows its rooms by Male area, Female area and Co-ed area, plus any clothing requirements we found.
Then call or check the place's website about three things:
Most gym steam rooms we list are in the locker rooms. Of the 610 gyms with a steam room, 549 have one in the men's area and only 58 have a co-ed one. Where a steam room is co-ed, our clothing data says swimwear is required at 362 places and clothing optional at 200. Bathhouses, hotels and gyms almost always ask for a swimsuit. Day spas are split closer to evenly, so check the listing.
Many full-service gyms do. Of the 1,127 gyms in our directory, 610 have a steam room. 24 Hour Fitness, Equinox and Life Time have one at most clubs, while budget chains like Planet Fitness don't have them.
No. Planet Fitness has no steam rooms or saunas, including with Black Card. If you want steam with a membership, look at a full-service chain or a YMCA near you.
Sometimes. Many hotel spas let non-guests use the steam room if they book a treatment or buy a day pass, and some keep it for hotel guests only. Call the spa and ask what is included.
It's a steam room with eucalyptus oil or branches added to the steam, so the air smells strongly of eucalyptus. It's common at Equinox, Life Time and hotel spas.
Usually around 110 to 120°F, much cooler than a dry sauna. It feels hotter than that because sweat can't evaporate in the wet air, so start with 5 to 10 minutes.
At most gyms, no. The steam room is usually inside the men's and women's locker rooms. Bathhouses and some hotel spas have co-ed steam rooms, where swimsuits are normally required.
