Many do, but not every YMCA has a sauna. Each Y is run by its own local nonprofit, so the amenities change from one branch to the next, even within the same city. If a sauna matters to you, check your branch before you join.
Among the YMCAs we list, saunas are common. Of the 84 YMCA branches in the AllSaunas directory as of October 2026, 79 have a sauna and 46 have a steam room. 41 have both.
There are roughly 2,600 YMCAs in the US, according to the Y's own key facts. They aren't franchises of one company. Each local Y is either an independent nonprofit or a branch of a larger regional association, with its own local board. The national office supports them with training and resources, and each Y decides how it serves its own community, as the Y in Marshall, Minnesota, explained in its local paper.
That includes the building. A big downtown Y with a pool and a full locker room is far more likely to have a sauna than a small branch built around a gym floor and kids' programs.
Our directory only lists places where we've found a sauna or steam room. So these 84 branches are the Ys that have heat rooms, not a sample of all Ys.
The dry sauna is the standard YMCA setup, and a steam room is the add-on. A hot tub or whirlpool by the pool is common too, at about two in three of the Ys we list. None of them has an infrared sauna or a cold plunge.
The 84 YMCAs are spread across 24 states. Virginia has the most with 14, most of them run by the YMCA of South Hampton Roads around Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. Pennsylvania, Alabama and Ohio have 8 each, and South Carolina, Florida and California have 5 each.
That spread says more about where we've found and checked Ys so far than about where saunas are. If your state isn't in that list, your local Y may still have one.
Usually not. At 71 of our 84 YMCAs, the sauna or steam room is inside the men's and women's locker rooms. That means separate rooms and no mixing.
At 12 branches, the only sauna is a co-ed one, usually next to the pool or whirlpool. Those require a swimsuit.
Each Y sets its own rules. Among the ones we checked, the minimum age runs from 13 to 18. Here are those examples:
Most Ys also ask you to shower first and avoid shaving, lotions, food or phones in the sauna. The rules are usually posted on the door.
Our listings mark most YMCA locker room saunas clothing optional, but many Ys ask you to cover up. San Francisco's Y wants a towel or swimsuit, and the South Hampton Roads Y asks for a towel or light clothing. A towel is the safe choice.
In a co-ed sauna by the pool, wear your swimsuit. Our guide to what to wear in a sauna covers gym saunas and other places in more detail.
Often, yes. Many Ys take part in Nationwide Membership, which lets full-facility members visit other participating Ys around the country. The YMCA of Central Ohio's rules are typical: you need to use your home Y at least half the time, bring your card and photo ID, and any Y can restrict access.
That means a member at a Y without a sauna might be able to use one at a nearby branch. Ask both Ys before you count on it.
If there's no Y with a sauna near you, other gym chains might work better. Our Planet Fitness article has a table of the gym chains we track, and LA Fitness is one of the most reliable for a dry sauna.
No. Each Y decides its own amenities, and many smaller branches don't have one. We list 84 YMCAs with a sauna or steam room, out of roughly 2,600 Ys in the country.
Some do. 46 of the 84 YMCAs in our directory have a steam room, usually in addition to a dry sauna.
It depends on the branch. San Francisco's Y keeps out anyone 12 or under, the South Hampton Roads Y in Virginia keeps out under-16s, and the Madison Area YMCA in New Jersey sets the minimum at 18. Check the rules posted at your Y.
Usually not. Most YMCA saunas are in the men's and women's locker rooms. Some branches have a co-ed sauna by the pool, where swimsuits are required.
Often. Nationwide Membership lets full-facility members visit other participating Ys, but each Y can set limits, so call ahead.
